I take this opportunity days before Christmas 2007 to thank you deeply for your support by posting comments in Gallery during the past six months. Gallery is the popular hub of Opera Gems. There is a fairly steady stream of visitors who register in Gallery weekly but very few of them post comments. I can think on some of the reasons: Shyness, little knowledge of how to express an opinion, little knowledge of English and because almost all the Gallery pages are reserved for donors. In the new year, I will endeavour to rectify some areas of Gallery to encourage comments by RUs. Also, there are preferred renditions and singers. In December 2007, for example, I note that our site has been searched for Anna Netrebko (47 hits) followed by Mario Lanza (38), Ettore Bastianini (14) and Mariana Nicolesco (13).

comments: Just to support Boult's comment on McKellar - I have heard no
other singer match McKellar doing Handel. McKellar's own reluctance to
commit to opera cost him dearly and Bob Sharples arrangements on other
recordings are not only poor - they are disrespectful! Decca also
contributed to the downgrading of McKellar. The Bould/McKellar/Handel
recording pleases my ears like no other. This was re-issued on CD a few
years ago and topped the classical charts in the UK. The CD does not
quite match the vinyl in quality - they never do - but McKellar's voice
sits firmly in the range reproduced well by CD. Decca would not have
'hyped' McKellar: they did little to exploit his possibilities. Adrian
Boult knew what he was talking about.

The web site server located in U.S.A. failed during the night of 6 January 2007. Gallery was the hardest hit. The server was fixed and the web site put back on line. Nevertheless, the gateway installed in this page sent an error message to anyone who tried to fill in the gateway with information and clicked “submit”. This malfunction was discovered in May 2007 and has since been repaired.

Your opinion about my site and compliments have moved me, believe me. No, you are not due for another donation. A donation to Opera Gems is spontaneous, voluntary and I certainly do not refuse it when it arrives!

I chose video 2, which is the last passage of the long and ardent love duet, since it epitomises the geisha's ethereal feelings of love and Pinkerton's passion for her. comments: Dear Joseph, I again listened to your recording of 'Amarilli' by Georges Thill. I have a recording of the song by Gigli which is great and this rendition by Thill compares favorably. Prior to discovering your Opera Gems website, I wasn't really familiar with Georges Thill. He has a warm, rich Italianate type of sound and his legato and mezza voce are superb. I suspect that he had some 'belcanto' school training somewhere along the line.Thank you so much for sharing these vocal gems that I probably would never have heard without your generosity. comments: Hello, Just a small comment about the page on Castrati; you mention that 'despite this, Mozart turned to his tutor in 1764' (or words to that effect). That is of little consequence as he would have been only eight years old at the time; he was born in 1756. Incidentally, he is my teacher's teacher's teacher etc.!

I like your site very much, though.

Miss Tebaldi was featured in home a few days after her sad departure. An audio clip of her Vissi d'arte from Tosca was also pubished. There will be ample opportunities in future to feature her art either in gallery or in recalls. (ed.)

Puccini was an avid reader, researcher and keenly attuned to what was going on in the music world of his time. Undoubtedly, he knew of Debussy's impressionistic music notes and may have been influenced by them. Some notes in Madama Butterfly do remind us of Debussy. (ed.)
