Dear Members of the Panel and Registered Users,
I take this opportunity days before Christmas 2007 to thank you deeply for your support by posting comments in Gallery during the past six months. Gallery is the popular hub of Opera Gems. There is a fairly steady stream of visitors who register in Gallery weekly but very few of them post comments. I can think on some of the reasons: Shyness, little knowledge of how to express an opinion, little knowledge of English and because almost all the Gallery pages are reserved for donors. In the new year, I will endeavour to rectify some areas of Gallery to encourage  comments by RUs. Also, there are preferred renditions and singers. In December 2007, for example, I note that our site has been searched for Anna Netrebko (47 hits) followed by Mario Lanza (38),  Ettore Bastianini (14) and Mariana Nicolesco (13).
Best Regards, Joseph

Dear Members of the Panel,
I take this opportunity days before Christmas 2007 to thank you again for your support in the opera review page with comments on the NABUCCO productions of 1981 and 2007. Your input is very knowledgeable, in excellent taste and commensurable with the high quality of OG contents. As a small token of my thanks, I have published your photos next to your names in the opera review page. comments:  Your site is fantastic. Bravo! I have enjoyed thoroughly perusing the many facets of the site and have registered as I feel wholeheartedly that this is one of the finest sites devoted to that greatest of the fine arts, Opera. One small note which you may perhaps want to change. In you listing for tenor Mario Lanza, you note that his recording of "Niun mi tema" from OTELLO as being recorded in 1956. In actuality, the recording was made by Mario for his last film FOR THE FIRST TIME in 1959. He recorded it in the Rome Opera House with Maestro Constantine Callinicos conducting the Rome Opera Orchestra.

comments:  Just to support Boult's comment on McKellar - I have heard no
other singer match McKellar doing Handel. McKellar's own reluctance to
commit to opera cost him dearly and Bob Sharples arrangements on other
recordings are not only poor - they are disrespectful! Decca also
contributed to the downgrading of McKellar. The Bould/McKellar/Handel
recording pleases my ears like no other. This was re-issued on CD a few
years ago and topped the classical charts in the UK. The CD does not
quite match the vinyl in quality - they never do - but McKellar's voice
sits firmly in the range reproduced well by CD. Decca would not have
'hyped' McKellar: they did little to exploit his possibilities. Adrian
Boult knew what he was talking about.

The web site server located in U.S.A. failed during the night of 6 January 2007. Gallery was the hardest hit. The server was fixed and the web site put back on line. Nevertheless, the gateway installed in this page sent an error message to anyone who tried to fill in the gateway with information and clicked “submit”. This malfunction was discovered in May 2007 and has since been repaired.

Gent.mo Dott. Fragala,

Chiara Ursino

Dear Craig,

Your opinion about my site and compliments have moved me, believe me. No, you are not due for another donation. A donation to Opera Gems is spontaneous, voluntary and I certainly do not refuse it when it arrives!

The state of the affairs is this:

The web site server located in U.S.A. failed during the night of 6 January 2007. Gallery was the hardest hit. The server has been fixed and the web site put back on line. Nevertheless, files backup restoration and program tests are continuing in Gallery. Regretfully, entry to all categories in Gallery has been suspended until the work is completed.

I put this announcement in Home and definitely you missed it. It is just below the Xmas card at the right margin of Home. I was shocked when the server failed. Yet, in hindsight, the server was destined for a disaster. In the past three months, I noted its erratic response when I called upon it to publish pages of my site. I simply put it to heavy traffic.

I have received wonderful messages of support and encouragement from gallery users and the two great tenors who are honouring the young pages of gallery. Hopefully, gallery will be on view soon and you will be able to listen to very exciting new MP3s sung by the tenors and the young singers.

Yours truly,

Joseph

Le Sue parole mi danno coraggio e forza di continuare in un momento di tanta

Approfitto dell'occasione per Augurare a Lei e la Sua famiglia un Buon Natale e un Felice Anno Nuovo.

In response to the suggestion below, it is useful and beneficial to put an option for those people who wish to upload files. We may do it in future. Most file sharing websites offer free file hosting for unlimited periods providing the file is downloaded at least once within a limited time period (sometimes 10 days). One has to pay $US 1.00 (for what is called premium download) for the link to, say, a video file. We thank Yonataz for his suggestion. (ed,)

Georges Thill, the most famous French tenor of the XX century, perfected his art and Italian pronunciation in Italy under the equally famous Italian tenor Fernando De Lucia, who epitomised what has generally become accepted as the belcanto style. An amiable and lively man, Thill befriended the celebrated Italian tenor Giacomo Lauri-Volpi. (ed.)

Prior to discovering your Opera Gems website, I wasn't really familiar with Georges Thill. He has a warm, rich Italianate type of sound and his legato and mezza voce are superb. I suspect that he had some 'belcanto' school training somewhere along the line.Thank you so much for sharing these vocal gems that I probably would never have heard without your generosity. I am deeply appreciative. Please continue the good work!

Puccini was an avid reader, researcher and keenly attuned to what was going on in the music world of his time. Undoubtedly, he knew of Debussy's impressionistic music notes and may have been influenced by them. Some notes in Madama Butterfly do remind us of Debussy. (ed.)

Thank you very much for the E-card!  I did send some friends an E-card, in the meantime also to myself as you wrote and it works!

Thanks for your advice and I surely will enjoy more music in the future from your website.

It is really great to work on a letter in Word or something else and the possibility to listen to beautiful music from the website at the same time.

Thanks again and many greetings from the Netherlands, Dorothy

There is a live record of her 1937 Turandot at Covent Garden with Martinelli as Calaf conducted by Barbirolli, but unfortunately only In questa reggia and the Riddle scene, unsurpassed as they are.

I should, however, point out that the Otello Finale (Niun Mi Tema) was recorded in *1958*, not 1956. It was among a number of operatic selections that Lanza recorded at the Rome Opera House for his final film, For the First Time. I actually mention this recording in my biography of Lanza at grandi-tenori.com. Thank you, and all the best for your splendid site. Derek McGovern

comments:  'La Traviata' in featured bits.  I couldn't find where to enter comment, so here they are:  Apart from Fleming, who sang beautifully and whose vocal acting was exactly right for Violetta, I found the other two principals disappointing.  Hvorostovsky sounded woolly and unconvincing.   He was tonally below par - no incisiveness and sounded as though he couldn't care less about either his son or his daughter.  Vargas wasn't much better - for me, there was little ardency in his singing and it was as if he was just going through the motions.  I thought the orchestra was just about inaudible and on the whole I would have expected better from what is reputed to be the world's foremost opera house.  I'll rate Fleming a 4; Vargas & Hvorostovsky 3 each and the Orchestra a 2. I've heard better from provincial opera companies.  Sorry, but as my school reports would say; "could do better."

Opera is drama or comedy set to music with soloists, chorus on the stage and orchestra in the pit. The combination of stage set design, costumes, action, human voice and music attracts lots of people. Instrumental works are music compositions for orchestra set on the stage. The sheer music attracts as many people. These art forms fulfil longings for classical music and cause sensations invariably.
